    THE REVEREND MICHAEL BETHUNE

Reverend Michael Bethune was born in Paterson, New Jersey and is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Mitchell and Lottie Bethune. He grew up attending the Solid Rock Baptist Church of Paterson, under the leadership of the late Rev. William James Worthem, the church’s senior pastor

Rev. Bethune is a product of the Paterson Public School System. He is a graduate of Philadelphia Biblical University, where he earned an Associate of Biblical Studies Degree. Upon completion of that educational pursuit, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Biblical Counseling Degree from Trinity College in Newburg, Indiana. He earned his Masters of Divinity Degree at Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, New Jersey where he was honored as the recipient of the Henry L. Lambdin Award for Excellence in Pastoral Leadership. Rev. Bethune has also received certificates in counseling studies from both Rutgers University of New Brunswick, and UMDNJ [University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, located in Newark.] He’ll begin his Ph.D. work at Rutgers in January 2011.

Rev. Bethune received his call to ministry in 1990, yet it wasn’t until he fully grasped some of life’s invaluable lessons that he accepted the mantle of responsibility and began to walk in the calling on his life. In 1994 he sought the advice and guidance of the Rev. Dr. Jerry M. Carter, Jr, senior pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Morristown, New Jersey. As a result of the prompting of the Holy Spirit and Pastor Carter’s influence, he became a member of Calvary and immediately began to employ his leadership gifts and talents among the congregation and in the surrounding community. He was licensed to the gospel ministry by Pastor Carter in September of 1997 and has served faithfully in several leadership capacities, to include Youth Pastor, Associate Minister and Wellspring Counselor. He was ordained to the gospel ministry by Calvary and The Permanent Council of The North Jersey District Missionary Baptist Association. Since being at Calvary he has established several biblically-centered support groups for some of the most vulnerable marginalized segments of society [to include seniors and teens], all of which have all significantly impacted the church and the local community. Rev. Bethune has preached and taught regularly at Calvary since joining its ministerial staff in 1997, and is often called upon to preach, teach and lead training seminars and conferences in various locations throughout the State of New Jersey and beyond. He is also the author of the recently self-published book entitled, “Unto the Least of These”, a work designed to assist churches and other organizations in their outreach efforts to the less fortunate of society.

Over the years, Rev. Bethune has proven to be a leader who is committed to the cause of community transformation. During the last fifteen years, he has served as Chaplain of The Market Street Mission of Morristown; as Program Director of Teen-Pride, Inc of Morristown; as Youth Pastor for the Salvation Army’s Newark Westside Corp; and as Director of Resource Acquisition and Distribution for Star of Hope Ministries, Inc., of Paterson, New Jersey. Presently he serves in the capacity of Pastoral Minister for Covenant House of New Jersey at its Newark location. Since 2004 he has also served as a chapel speaker for National Football League (NFL) teams in the Tri-State Area.

His primary ministerial objective is to unflinchingly convey the liberating love and power of the Gospel of Jesus the Christ. In doing so, Rev. Bethune believes that not only will it result in the eternal salvation of those that God entrusts to his care, but also in their day-to-day salvation, as it addresses societal ills related to issues of injustice.

Rev. Bethune is married to Roselyn Dishon. They have four children; Pauletta-Michelle of Alabama, Neville, Kaleb, and Elias. The Bethune’s presently reside in Wharton, New Jersey.
